The problems of rural areas are identified by a number of ways in our country. Research is one of the important tools through which prevailing social problems could be identified. The dynamics of rural development and research are inextricably interrelated. Literally, research signifies repeating a thrust for something assuming that the earlier interventions were not exhaustive and complete in the sense that there were rooms for improvements. Therefore, social research looks for viable solutions for existing social problems.
Research is one of the mandated functions of Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD). The Research Division is responsible for all research activities of the Academy. The Academy has been conducting research since its inception with a view to bringing socio-economic development of the rural people. The Academy emphasizes on the participation of the rural people in the development activities and believes that their problems should be viewed from their point of interests. The Academy conducts mainly three types of research i.e. survey research, evaluation research and action research. The survey research is aimed at collection of socio-economic data for the purpose of planning and project preparation whereas evaluation research is done to assess the impact of development programmes/projects. On the other hand, action researches or pilot projects are undertaken to find improved institutional and administrative models with improved coordination and techniques of production. Also, research attention is now given on various aspects of social problem and governance. Research findings are documented and these are used both as training materials and develop the action research project in the Academy, and as dissemination of information to the Ministries, Planning Commission and other policy makers for undertaking development programmes/projects.

Research Division is headed by the Director (Research). He/she is assisted by one Joint Director, one Deputy Director and one Assistant Director. The Research Division has one Research Assistant, four Tabulators, four Supervisors; eight Investigators and four supporting staff for various services.
